Sustainability
How we measure and reduce the environmental impact of our engineering operations. Policy v1.2.
Purpose and scope
Epcotec acknowledges its responsibility to contribute to a better world for present and future generations. As a senior software engineering and applied R&D studio working across Australia and Canada, our largest environmental influence runs through the digital systems we design, build, operate and hand over to our clients. This policy states the commitments that govern how we manage that influence. It applies to Epcotec Pty Ltd and Epcotec Ltd, to every department, and to the way we engage with clients and suppliers.
Our behaviour is guided by our values of Excellence, Integrity, Ownership, Courage, Collaboration and Care. Care names our people, our clients, our communities and the environment explicitly, and this policy is where that value takes practical form.
Our commitments
1. Build software that wastes less
The software itself is our most meaningful lever. The systems we hand to clients often run for years, so decisions made at design time compound across the life of each system.
- Efficient code. We write lean, well-architected software, because every wasted cycle carries
an energy cost across the life of a system.
- Right-sized cloud. We provision only the compute and storage each workload needs, and we
scale down or switch off what is not in use.
- Data minimisation. We collect, store and retain only the data a system needs, and delete the
rest.
- Long-lived systems. We design for maintainability so clients can run their software
efficiently for its full intended life.
2. Run our own operations responsibly
- We prefer renewable-powered hosting regions and providers for the workloads we operate.
- We buy hardware for longevity, repair and redeploy before replacing, and recycle e-waste
through certified channels.
- We are remote-first by default. We travel only when in-person work materially improves the
outcome, and we prefer lower-emission options when we do travel.
- Laboratory work in our applied R&D practice operates under controlled procedures that prevent
pollution and manage waste responsibly.
3. Measure before we claim
We are establishing a carbon footprint baseline covering Scope 1, Scope 2 and the material Scope 3 sources relevant to a remote-first software studio. We will publish our footprint and methodology openly as the measurement matures, and we will set reduction targets from that baseline rather than ahead of it. We do not claim offsets, neutrality or certification we do not hold. Our environmental management approach is aligned with ISO 14001.
4. Support our people and communities
Sustainability is also social. We invest in a workplace where our people do their best work, learn continuously and are treated with fairness and respect. We contribute to the communities where we live and work, and we acknowledge and respect Australia's First Nations peoples and Canada's Indigenous peoples as we pursue reconciliation.
Governance and review
The Founder sponsors this policy and is accountable for its direction; department leads carry it into day-to-day decisions. We review this policy and our sustainability performance at least annually, and we report progress through our Sustainability Report and Carbon Footprint Report.
